Manchester bomber
The Manchester Arena bombing occurred on 22 May 2017 during an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. Here’s what is known:
The attack was a suicide bombing carried out by Salman Abedi, who detonated an explosive device concealed in a backpack in the City Room foyer as the concert ended, resulting in 22 deaths (plus the attacker) and injuring hundreds more .
The device was an improvised TATP nail bomb packed with nuts and bolts to act as shrapnel .
Salman Abedi was known to British intelligence—but despite being a "subject of interest" from as early as 2014, MI5 did not investigate him more thoroughly before the attack .
A public inquiry found multiple missed opportunities: security shortcomings at the venue, failure to act on intelligence, and insufficient intervention by both MI5 and venue security .
The inquest concluded that Abedi died by “suicide while undertaking a terror attack,” having killed 22 innocent people and injured many others .
The plot was orchestrated with the assistance of his brother, Hashem Abedi, who provided explosive materials. Hashem was extradited to the UK, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 55 years .
In April 2025, the UK passed Martyn’s Law (Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill), named in memory of one of the victims, to enforce stricter security measures at public venues and better protect the public from future mass attacks .
